This class is a prerequisite for CASTING 105: Lost Wax Casting

Learn essential torch safety, gain experience pouring molten metal, and practice foundational casting techniques such as water and broom casting. These organic methods produce dramatic, one-of-a-kind results and provide a perfect introduction to the world of casting.

No experience necessary—just bring your curiosity!

This workshop is ideal for artists, jewellers, and curious makers who are interested in exploring the possibilities of working with molten metal. You'll gain confidence using a jeweller’s torch &  develop essential technical skills. It also prepares you for more advanced techniques such as Sand Casting and Lost Wax Casting.

Students provide their own:

  • N95 mask
  • Safety glasses
  • Hearing protection
  • Closed-toed shoes (leather if possible)
  • Hair tie (for longer hair)
  • An apron or clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty (optional)

Whether you're a complete beginner or have some metalworking experience, this course is perfect for hobbyists, artists, and creatives eager to explore the possibilities of casting. For students looking to elevate their designs there is an opportunity to purchase silver or gold via special order. Contact the instructor a minimum of two weeks before class to ensure your materials arrive in time. Cost is determined by market metal rates and is sold by the gram.

Metal Use & Safety Guidelines

For the health and safety of all students, only metal purchased from Samonte Cruz Studios, a reputable jewelry supplier, a metal manufacturer, or the Canadian/US Mint may be cast or soldered in the studio. Even stamped jewelry can contain harmful alloys when heated. If you’d like to use your own metal, you may book a private class or casting session at the instructor’s discretion.

CLASS CANCELLATION & REFUND POLICY

No Refunds: Refunds will not be issued for any reason including failed castings or missed classes.

Sick Policy: If you are sick, notify the instructor via text at least 24 hours in advance to receive a credit for a future class.

Class Cancellation or Weather Closures: If a class is cancelled due to instructor illness or inclement weather, a make-up class will be scheduled, or a credit will be provided for a future session.
