Meet the Instructor

Hi, I'm Samonte!

I’m a Filipinx goldsmith and interdisciplinary artist with over 20 years of teaching experience. In 2025, I’m celebrating 10 years dedicated to the art of metalsmithing—and I’m honoured to share this creative milestone with you.

Samonte Cruz Studios was born from a moment of rupture and repair—a curious rekindling of my creative life during a decade of recovery from a severe spinal injury—a path that led me back to myself through the transformative power of craft.

Jewelry Making Classes Near Nelson BC - Samonte Cruz Studios

I began studying metalsmithing in 2015 at the Kootenay School of the Arts and founded Samonte Cruz Studios after graduating in 2017. Since then, I’ve taught at Selkirk College, apprenticed under a master goldsmith, and continued to hone my craft—combining time-honored techniques with modern tools and technology. Learn more about my journey here.

As a queer and trans artist who faced bullying growing up, I’m deeply committed to creating an inclusive, supportive, and empowering space where students feel safe to explore their creativity. Whether you're designing your very first piece or building on existing skills, my goal is to help you grow with confidence, resilience, and a sense of joy in the process of artistic discovery.
